This morning, Bethany and I tried getting up at 6am instead of 9 like we have been the past several days. I woke up feeling sick and with a sore throat – she made me toast and told me to take a nap. As she expected, the small bite to eat and some rest took care of almost everything. After I woke up, she made me a cup of hot tea to soothe the last of my sore throat. While sitting on the couch, I was stirring the tea when it somehow tipped over backwards towards me. I apparently (we played CSI when we got home from the doctor’s to piece together what happened) threw the mug across the room – the mug was by the door, the tea bag was halfway between the mug and the couch.
Bethany was terrific (which I get to appreciate every day) – she brought me frozen peas to put on part of the burn and called the doctor to see if they’d like to see us or if we should go to the Emergency Room. They said they’d take us right away, so she helped me get dressed and hobble down to the car.
I looked like a fool walking in – baggy sweatpants, a huge t-shirt, and a pack of peas helping (with decreasing success) dull the pain. The doctor seemed bewildered and wrote me a prescription for pain killers and an ointment to put on the burn. It was as the nurses were bandaging me up that I got an appreciation for how bad things were. It took them an hour to bandage up my torso and right hand. They stocked Beth up with some supplies as they explained the bandages would need to be changed twice a day.
The doctor’s office called in my prescriptions so we were able to pick them up on our way home – getting the medicine right away has helped me from experiencing any severe pain (after the initial burning). Nurse Bethany had me take a nap if I wanted to go to see the kids today – after negotiating with her, I took my nap and we left for the hospital.
At the hospital, Beth had to wash my left hand for me and help me put on the gown – how our roles have reversed in the last few days. I was able to hold both of the kids but needed more help than I would have liked.
Both Lilly and Josiah are doing even better today – Lilly is going to start trying to take some of her feeding by mouth tomorrow (instead of from her feeding tube) – she’s a bit ahead of schedule, but that’s the way we like it. We left some clothes with the nursing staff and they were changed into more of their adorable outfits when we got there.
We’ve had much better experiences with the nursing staff over the last two days than I had been having. With Beth there, things seem to go better. I think the nurses are more comfortable with mothers than they are with fathers. With my bandaged hand, we weren’t able to get any pictures with the camera. Beth did, however, take this one of me in my bandages:
Bethany’s parents met us at home after we left the hospital. They made us dinner, helped clean up the house and helped us get caught up on laundry. The help was much needed and very much appreciated – it’s relieving to not be exhausted and have a long list of stuff that needs to be done.
We’ll have more baby pictures tomorrow but I am going to get some sleep to help recover. We’re both exhausted (or “zausted” for Caleb).
Here are the baby pictures we got today (via Bethany’s phone).

Oh Steve, I can't believe YOU'RE infirm now, too! Beth's got the right prescription though - tea and sleep! So glad to hear that she's feeling better - it would be so miserable if both of you were down for the count at the same time.
Love the pictures, and love you guys.
