Visiting at the hospital by myself

Bethany and I had… we’ll call it a scuffle… with her doctor’s office this morning.  She apparently kept waking herself up all last night with coughing fits (that I slept through).  At 8am when her doctor’s office opened, she was on the phone.  The phone was busy most times she tried, other times she got “The number you are calling has been disconnected”, and other times, she got the answering service’s hold music.  By 9ish when I woke up and wandered out, she was pretty aggravated.  Between 9am and 10:30 when we pulled in at the doctor’s office, things got much worse.  We decided to work on getting Bethany to the doctor’s as our first priority – making right the answering service and telephone injustice would have to wait (I was content to handle the latter on my own, as I couldn’t do much to make her better, but it seemed like a smarter move to sit in the doctor’s office with her instead).

Once we saw the doctor (the office’s front desk staff got her an appointment right away – they weren’t the same frustrating people from the answering service shenanigans from earlier in the morning), she sent Bethany out with several prescriptions.  We stopped at CVS to get them filled and went home.

An hour later, I ran out to CVS to get everything (and more boxes of tissues) before going down to the hospital.  I felt like doctor as I dispensed all of her various medications…

With Bethany armed with medicine to help tackle her coughing/sneezing (and new as of this morning, pink eye), I could do no more so I set off for the hospital.  For those wondering, the first thing I did was check all of the medications (I even brought the CVS Pharmacy drug information sheets) with the NICU staff to confirm they had no concerns about the medicine in the breast milk.

The kids were doing better – I had two successful diaper changes in a row!  They were both still off of their air and breathing well.  It was exciting to get them out and hold them both on my lap again – I’ll be sad to share when they let Bethany back in!  It is so fascinating to me how their heart rates and breathing calm when they lay next to each other.

As of our last check-in with the nurse before we started to settle in for the night, Josiah weighs 3lb, 12oz and Lilly weighs 3lb, 4oz.

Since I can’t hold both of them and take pictures by myself, I only have these that I took after they went back to their “houses”:

We can’t say enough how much we enjoy hearing from you.  We have read every card, text, message, email, etc.  We have listened to every voicemail.  Your thoughts and encouragement are dearly appreciated.  It amazes us how exhausted we are after a day of only making a trip down to the hospital for a few hours.  The unceasing stream of encouragement gives us energy when we need it and helps us rest peacefully when we need to.

Goodnight.

Thanks for the great dialogue and photos. It helps us to feel connected and partially makes up for not being able to see/touch them.

Bethany - I'm sure you will feel better very shortly.

Hi B & S,
I love to come home and check the blog! It's one of the first things I do when I get home from work. Thanks for taking the time to update it. I'm sure it is difficult for B to be at home away from the babies for such a long period of time. We're thinking of and praying for you. The babies look great!

Hey guys!
Love seeing your pictures and hearing first-hand how you and the babies are doing.

Beth, stinks that you're so sick! In the meantime, rest up so you come back to the babies. Good thing Steve takes so many pictures so you can see at least the digital Lilly and Josiah.

Steve, stay strong! So much has happened in the past few weeks, and you've done an awesome job of holding down the fort.

Love you guys :)
