Well, it really is snowing tonight. It's rather wet and probably won't stick, but it looks beautiful anyway.
Although subbing has been consistent, yesterday and today I didn't work. I've been restless, but have found plenty of things that I stuffed on my ongoing, ever growing list. So, it's been nice to sleep in an hour or two and run errands or complete projects.
Sitting here, with time suddenly on my hands, I realized how much of my life has spent running and running. Ever since I was 13, I've had a part-time job. First it was working at one of our church's thrift stores, then it was McDonald's (I was the drive through girl), and I've always babysat for people here and there. When I moved to Iowa, I worked at Panera for a year and then at a daycare/preschool for 3 years. When I went to Olivet, I worked for the Office of Transfer Admissions and as an RA.
Even when I moved to New Jersey, I was planning a wedding. It was crazy! It wasn't until after I got married and Steve went back to work that I really knew what it was like to have some serious time on my hands. It wasn't really a vacation because I spent a large amount of time by myself. I learned to enjoy the quite of a day spent by the pool or at the beach, or reading at Panera.
I have never considered myself deprived of the ability to rest, however, it would appear that I struggle with it. I wouldn't say that people who don't find time to rest are wrong, just missing out.
While walking into AC Moore to purchase picture frames, I saw a mother lifting her small son out of a cart. For a moment he was standing up, balanced by her hands, laughing and laughing. She bent down to kiss him, then picked him up. How completely adorable. I think I shared that to say how much I consider moments like that worthwhile in my life as opposed to the ones that rob me of my ability to find joy in the smallest of victories or the greatest of moments.
Hope you've noticed something that's made you smile recently.
