Today was an exciting milestone for them – they have been moved out of the intensive section of the NICU and into the intermediate section. They are still in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), just not in the more critical section.
I showed up to visit them today and there were no babies in the spot I had seen them last. While both Josiah and Lilly squirm around all over the place inside their isolettes (their plexi-glass “houses”), I’m pretty sure neither of them are able to squirm the isolette out of position. After checking with the nursing manager, I found out they’d been moved! I don’t recall if we shared their move on Tuesday (from one part of the intensive room to another part) – it may have been overshadowed by Bethany and her germs getting chased out.
Today’s move means they have more neighbors and fewer worries. Both are still breathing completely on their own – we were delighted that neither Josiah nor Lilly needed to go back onto their cannula after their first full day without it.
Now their job is to get older! After another week or so, we should be able to start bottle-feeding them as their final big hurdle to come home! Like our friend Jen says: “Go, babies, go!”
Typically, they both fall asleep after about 5 minutes once we’re holding them. Today, Lilly kept her eyes open and was looking around curiously for 30 minutes – I imagine she slept well afterwards.
Here are my pictures after holding them today:
