It’s a minor detail but a major oversight – I failed to plan the time change from Eastern to Central time! When the kids wake up at 7am, it’s 6am local time. They go down for their morning nap between 8am and 9am local time, have lunch at 11:30, and want to eat dinner close to 4:30. The biggest complication, however, is that their bedtime is 6:30 local time!
The kids have been great given how different these last few days have been. It started with disrupted sleep on the drive to Indianapolis (Saturday night) and worsened with no naps on the drive to St. Louis (Monday morning and afternoon).
More than anything, it’s a test of our patience with them. When they are difficult or fussy, it’s a clear result of the environmental changes we’ve imposed on them. It’s a challenge, however, to remember that when Josiah’s twisting his body around trying to fight his way free instead of falling asleep for his nap. So far, thankfully, Beth and I have both been extra-gracious with the kids and are proud of how well they’re handling being away from home.
Much like bomb and drug dogs are highly trained to find things hidden away, Josiah is a “finder”. When we showed up at my grandparents’ house on Monday afternoon, he pushed his way into the house and ran directly for the scissors, cordless phone, and remote (trying to grab all 3). He’s into everything like a puppy would be! Today, we ran around in the yard and collected sticks. We go outside so he can get his energy out and run around – most times, it’s not long before he’s riding on my shoulders because he’s worn out but still wants to run around.
Lilly’s been herself. content to be a part of anything that’s going on. I was moving boxes out of the shed and took her for a ride on the hand truck – she squealed the whole way there and back. I’m so glad that she can be herself instead of being overwhelmed and shy around everyone!

[We brought our Roku along so we could put on one of the kids’ shows as we put them to bed. I was sitting with Josiah and Lilly was next to us on the couch. It only took a few minutes before she wanted to come over and join us.]

We missed the earthquake excitement on the east coast today. Fortunately everything at work was undisturbed!
We’re taking our camera with us tomorrow so we’ll have more pictures to share. Time for some rest!
