Bethany and I have 4 times each year we can go away on vacation – Spring Break, Summer, Teachers’ Convention in November, and Christmas.
Summer is always tricky for me since it’s only 8 weeks and I always have several things going on at work that make it hard to slip away for a couple weeks. Last summer was a mess with my surgery but we’re looking forward to a chance to be away this summer (though we’re not yet sure where we’ll go). I’d love to be able to take all of my vacation time consecutively but that’s not feasible (at least not this year).
For Teachers’ Convention weekend, we went down to Massanutten Resort (and more importantly, their indoor waterpark) and hope to be able to make that an annual trip. The place is deserted (except for the few New Jersey families who are used to running into other New Jersey families when vacationing that particular week in November) and is such fun for the kids.
Two years ago (twins had just turned 1), we went to Massanutten for Spring Break. Last year, Noah was only weeks old and we stayed home over break (Bethany went back to work right before break). This year, we wanted to make sure to head out for an adventure with the kids so we’re in Lancaster for the latter part of the week.
Before getting to Lancaster, I had jury duty this afternoon. I’ll skip the details but it was a very positive experience (much better than my last time in Camden County several years ago). I wasn’t selected (which would have been a big hassle given the unfortunate timing) but am looking forward to my next opportunity…
While I was at the courthouse, Beth got the kids’ things packed and the house picked up for us to leave. I got home and we left shortly thereafter (and stopped for dinner at a turnpike Roy Rogers)…
We’re staying at the Eden Resort in Lancaster in a “villa” (studio layout with a small side room with bunk beds for the kids). We moved the table out of the kids room to make room for Noah’s pack-n-play and have the twins sleeping in the bunk beds.
Tomorrow we will get up and head to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania for a couple hours. From there, we’re going to grab lunch and try to make the 12 noon ride on the Strasburg Railroad before heading back to the hotel for naps. We’ll see how things go from there…
One of my top travel tips with the kids is bringing along one of our Rokus. We’ve used it every single time we’ve been away with the kids. Bethany and I don’t have a cable TV subscription and instead put that money towards our Netflix subscription and purchases (movies and TV series subscriptions) on Amazon Instant Video. When we get to a hotel, we conveniently have our video library available on the hotel’s TV without any hassle. We don’t spend vacation watching TV all day but try to imagine unpacking and getting the place setup with Josiah (Lilly and Noah too, but just Josiah is enough to make my point) wandering around unsupervised with nothing to do…. Curious George saved the day.
Off to bed – we’ll have pictures and tales of our adventures tomorrow.
