"Happy Halloween" & More

We've had a very full and very wonderful beginning of school.

Life in the "new house" is amazing. So much of our time has been spent outside that we're just now getting to odds and ends in the house. We still have boxes in the garage, boxes in all the bedrooms and closets as well as the rec. room and basement. We installed actual curtains this weekend and purchased and assembled the kids' bedroom furniture.

Although I'm really looking forward to the day when I can curl up on a fuzzy rug in front of the fire, I'm content to sit in the ONE chair in our living room and dream about it.

We're learning so much about our kids (and consequently ourselves through them). This is such a cool and exhausting time to be parents. Every day the say the craziest and most earnest things that make us laugh. We are really enjoying each individual personality and preferences that grow stronger.

One of the most important lessons about marriage that I'm learning is that one of the best ways you can show love is to do the little things that make life a little easier for your partner... even if it's the boring things like leaving the dishwasher clean and empty for the next morning, remembering to wash underwear, hanging curtains at 10 pm or getting out of bed to set the alarm (even though that means walking through the cold house when you're warm and cozy). It can't be a contest about who works the hardest, who has had the most sleep or who is the busiest. It's simply loving someone generously and purposefully. It's both extremely exciting and comforting to know that Steve and I have been married almost 8 years.

Steve and the kids are beginning to pack for our annual trip to Massanutten, Virgina. Although they'll leave on Sunday, I'll join them via train on Wednesday. I'm not going to lie... I'm REALLY excited about two whole days to myself. There are a million projects (mainly organizing) that must get done, but let's be honest, all I want to do is stay in bed and have a Harry Potter marathon.

I invited a bunch of friends from work and their kiddos to come to our house for a Halloween craft night. Holy moly. The house was packed with kids. Of course all the boys wanted to play outside and all the girls wanted to color and glue. Although things were a little crazy, it was so nice to see everyone and to show them the house.

After driving to the Lancaster, PA area and purchasing an antique wooden barn beam a month ago, we are still debating which finish to use for our mantle-piece. It's a beautiful beam; I love the rustic look that it will bring to the house. The stone for our fireplace should be in shortly and once that arrives, Steve will begin cutting and piecing it together. We installed sconces on each side of where the mantle will go. Even though it's a lot of work, it's really fun to see your dream come together bit by bit.

Each of the kids is fighting a nasty cough, but even so we had so much fun trick-or-treating with the kids' cousins and their families. They have such a nice neighborhood. It's our second year there and since we don't really have our own neighborhood, I see many more visits in our future! Our parents came back to our place for hoagies (and candy, of course). It's good to sit down with people you love and catch up for a bit.

There's so much more I'd like to write. I am really going to try to be more consistent about our blog, especially now that the holidays are drawing near. I catch myself pausing more and more; staring at the fireplace, my eyes are getting harder to hold open.

Much love to you all-
Bethany
